Optimization and adaptation of an in vitro strategy for the assessment of human toxicity of nanoparticles.

Manufactured nanomaterials and nanoparticles represent an emerging technological sector with more and more applications (microelectronics, coatings, textiles, sport goods, cosmetics, pharmaceutical applications, food industry applications…) As a spectacular augmentation of the professional and public exposure to nanomaterials is expected, we have to develop our knowledge of the toxicity of these materials. It appears that at this scale, the size matters as well as the chemical properties when it comes to describe the properties of the material and its interactions with living cells. Indeed, the nanoparticles and the nanoscaled materials show a huge surface area / mass ratio, conferring specific properties to them, and, the small size of the nanoparticles facilitates their uptake by cells and the passage across epithelial or endothelial barriers into the blood or the lymph circulation, from where they can reach internal organs.
The aim of this project is to contribute to the evaluation of the potential harmful effects of the nanoparticles on human health by studying the cellular mechanisms involved in vitro.
